We Are All In The Gutter, But Some Of Us Are Looking At The Stars: Emanuel’s Advice To His Younger Self

Oscar Wilde, one of my favorite authors, wrote this quote about optimism. My question to him would be: What do your stars look like?  Why would he call this place a gutter? We all see the world differently and I wanted this morning to give a Universal State of address from my spirit to yours.

A friend from church once said to me:

Imagine you go into your favorite restaurant. As you order your food, you see someone who tickles your eye and distorts your current reality. It almost inclines you to say  ” how could that be”? Let us imagine that you are 45 years old and that you see yourself eating food already. However, the age that you appear is half your age. You get a phone call as you curiously look upon yourself. It’s you father and he says that your mother has gone to the hospital and that you need to go visit her immediately. The words don’t even make sense to you since you can’t get over the bewildering fact that you may be hallucinating. You leave your food behind and walk up to yourself. A spirit, a voice, a thought comes into your mind that says “You only have 15 minutes to give wisdom”. What would you tell yourself?

Then my friend would continue: What would you tell yourself?

I am curious what my friends would tell themselves from the wisdom they acquired in the years and what they would have done if they thought differently. I came up with what I would tell myself and I wanted to share it this morning.

Warning: We all would say something different, so there is no “right or wrong” answer to anyone’s advice. . If there is any poem that has touched me more in my life. This is it. I want to start with that . His words have rung true in my life and I would remind myself to keep this prayer close. Whether you believe in the Catholic church or not, this prayer is a powerful testament of a mind filter that could truly bring joy. If we all embedded this prayer into our hearts, this world would be a different place. We could just attach it to our beliefs. This is the first thing I would tell myself is to memorize this prayer and insert it into my heart of hearts.

I only have a few minutes left before the tension starts building to go see my mother. The Spirit says ” You only have 8 minutes left before your father calls you again and you are officially neglecting your mother” . Got it. I only have 8 minutes left and I need to make this good.

Dearest Emanuel,

Be quick to love people. They are all sons and daughters of Heavenly Father. You are very rigid in your thoughts, how much happiness (water) can you fill in a cup that doesn’t expand (mind)? As they say “Your mind is like a parachute, it works best when it’s open.” Learn to love what others believe. The reason why you love them correlates to their belief in some way. You have grown up as a Catholic and I truly admire your desire to serve, look to Commune with God, then just read about Him. His whisper should be louder than the obnoxious sounds humanity provides on a daily basis. Take a walk and never forget to enjoy the simple pleasures of having two eyes, a nose, and ears to listen to others.  Don’t memorize things in books unless you intend to pour it out again to assist someone else.  Some of your closest people will betray you, learn to forgive them quickly and don’t learn the lesson longer than you have to. You are not a tree, simply move. When your mother passes away, you will learn more about yourself in 2 years than all your life combined. Remember that she is closer than you think and more powerful now!  You will always have access to her since you will one day believe that the spirit world resides on this earth.  Remember all the prayers that were answered? You tend to forget who answered them. Write them down and acknowledge the Ultimate Giver.  Here is a mantra to remember: Hurt People tend to hurt people. The people that have brought you the most strife need  the most love. You will question why they are the way they are. Stop questioning and love them until they tell you where their pain resides. Don’t make fun of other faiths and beliefs, we all think we are right in the end. We need to take what is good and adds value to others and try it experiment on words. . Experience a state of happiness by following someone who claimed in being the author of it. You will hear all your life “Come to our church, come here, your parents come from this faith…it’s only right that you fall close to your tree”. Remember! Your tree started before your parents and friends. As far as your body, you came as a descendent from Adam and have dozens of ancestors; but as far as your eternal spirit..you have no ancestors. It is just your Father in heaven and one descent down. Please pray and taste truthfulness in the morning so you could have discernment for the sour in life. Mind God’s business, not your own. Don’t care what the homeless do with your donation, God only see the heart of the donor. If you feel something is missing in life, you are probably right. Look for it starting that day and stop procrastinating experiences that will shape you to person you are supposed to become. Always remember: You are a one descendent away from an all powerful God and you are never alone.   You will read this scripture in a few years from now and it will impact your life and the way you can discern truth and what you need to instill in your life. Read these words slowly and remember that their is a method in discerning what you should put inside your mind, heart, and soul. Open a blue book called The Book of Mormon and read Alma 32; read the final verses about the seed.

26 Now, as I said concerning faith—that it was not a perfect knowledge—even so it is with my words. Ye cannot know of their surety at first, unto perfection, any more than faith is a perfect knowledge.

27 But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.

28 Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves—It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.

29 Now behold, would not this increase your faith? I say unto you, Yea; nevertheless it hath not grown up to a perfect knowledge.

30 But behold, as the seed swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, then you must needs say that the seed is good; for behold it swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow. And now, behold, will not this strengthen your faith? Yea, it will strengthen your faith: for ye will say I know that this is a good seed; for behold it sprouteth and beginneth to grow.

31 And now, behold, are ye sure that this is a good seed? I say unto you, Yea; for every seed bringeth forth unto its own likeness.

32 Therefore, if a seed groweth it is good, but if it groweth not, behold it is not good, therefore it is cast away.

33 And now, behold, because ye have tried the experiment, and planted the seed, and it swelleth and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, ye must needs know that the seed is good.

34 And now, behold, is your knowledge perfect? Yea, your knowledge is perfect in that thing, and your faith is dormant; and this because you know, for ye know that the word hath swelled your souls, and ye also know that it hath sprouted up, that your understanding doth begin to be enlightened, and your mind doth begin to expand.

35 O then, is not this real? I say unto you, Yea, because it is light; and whatsoever is light, is good, because it is discernible, therefore ye must know that it is good; and now behold, after ye have tasted this light is your knowledge perfect?

36 Behold I say unto you, Nay; neither must ye lay aside your faith, for ye have only exercised your faith to plant the seed that ye might try the experiment to know if the seed was good.

37 And behold, as the tree beginneth to grow, ye will say: Let us nourish it with great care, that it may get root, that it may grow up, and bring forth fruit unto us. And now behold, if ye nourish it with much care it will get root, and grow up, and bring forth fruit.

38 But if ye neglect the tree, and take no thought for its nourishment, behold it will not get any root; and when the heat of the sun cometh and scorcheth it, because it hath no root it withers away, and ye pluck it up and cast it out.

39 Now, this is not because the seed was not good, neither is it because the fruit thereof would not be desirable; but it is because your ground is barren, and ye will not nourish the tree, therefore ye cannot have the fruit thereof.

40 And thus, if ye will not nourish the word, looking forward with an eye of faith to the fruit thereof, ye can never pluck of the fruit of the tree of life.

41 But if ye will nourish the word, yea, nourish the tree as it beginneth to grow, by your faith with great diligence, and with patience, looking forward to the fruit thereof, it shall take root; and behold it shall be a tree springing up unto everlasting life.

42 And because of your diligence and your faith and your patience with the word in nourishing it, that it may take root in you, behold, by and by ye shall pluck the fruit thereof, which is most precious, which is sweet above all that is sweet, and which is white above all that is white, yea, and pure above all that is pure; and ye shall feast upon this fruit even until ye are filled, that ye hunger not, neither shall ye thirst.

43 Then, my brethren, ye shall reap the rewards of your faith, and your diligence, and patience, and long-suffering, waiting for the tree to bring forth fruit unto you.

– Alma 32: 26-43

Remember who you are Emanuel. A literal son of a loving God. You were born to be happy and to add value to everyone you meet. Don’t think about yourself, lose yourself in the service of your God.

(I run to the hospital afterwards with tears of joy streaming down my face while praying that I retained everything I said to myself )

What would you say to yourself if you only had 15 minutes to pour wisdom?
